SWEENEY TODD...

Client: Peach Theatre Company                                                                                                         Dates: 2nd - 26th June                                                                                                                          Venue: Maidment Theatre

Theatre show of the legendary Tale of Sweeny Todd, featuring a cast of 20 & a 9 piece orchestral band.

CHALLENGES:

Aidan Mills writes... With such a small space, and such a large cast, coherent reinforcement was an interesting challenge. Having 20 headsets on stage in the full chorus moments required thoughtful use of the two speaker systems and correct use of dynamic control and eq. I used the KV2 system that was flown above the stage, for all onstage singing and dialogue reinforcement, offering a natural source point to the stage, using the ground system only for the band and SFX, offering the audience appropriate and interesting sonic reference.

With such a wide range of dynamics within the vocal dialogue and singing performances, especially from the lead cast, I used DPA 4088's and ran all the lead cast through the XTA D2, which offered fantastic dynamic control.

The biggest challenge was that production time & rehearsals were very limited. Having hit our first preview without even seeing the show through in its entirety, (let alone a full rehearsal) the first few shows were fun filled indeed. However at the direction of the director "treat the first few as your rehearsals" I made it through and settled into the show. A pleasure every night.

HIGLIGHTS:

The cast are all first class actors, with Ross Girven and Linda Milligan leading in the roles of Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett. Ross has superb control of his voice, and a interesting subtitles in his voice, which with the help of the XTA D2, I could really bring out in the quieter, sinister, and emotional moments of the dialogue/singing without losing control of the overall volume or dynamic.
